Politecnico di Milano, POLIMI

Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The University has always focused on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research developing a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer. Research has always been linked to didactics and is a priority commitment which has allowed POLIMI to achieve high quality results at an international level as to join the university to the business world. Research activity moreover constitutes a parallel path to that formed by cooperation and alliances with the industrial system.

Politecnico takes part in several research and training projects collaborating with the most qualified European universities. Politecnico’s contribution is increasingly being extended to other countries: from North America to Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe. Today the drive to internationalization sees POLIMI take part in the European and world network of leading technical universities and offers several exchange and double-degree programs. Alta Brillanza is an important Laser Manufacturing related cluster initiative coordinated by the university Politecnico di Milano in northern Italy.


Fraunhofer FEP

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. is the leading organization for applied research in Europe, undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government. At present, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft maintains about 80 research units, including 60 research institutes, at over 40 locations in Germany. An annual turnover of about 1,700 million EUR is generated in contract research by a staff of about 18,000 employees.

Fraunhofer COMEDD is an independent institution of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in order to apply the researchresults of organic materials and systems into production. The Institution combines research and development activities for the manufacture, integration and technology development of electronic components, based on organic semiconductors. The Institution embodies a leading European production-related research and development center for organic semiconductors with focus on organic lightemitting diodes, OLED microdisplays and vacuum technologies. Our infrastructure is composed of different pilot linesin several clean rooms with a unique vacuum coating line for the production of OLED and OLED integration on silicon substrates as well as a research line for a roll-to-roll production on flexible substrates.

Fraunhofer COMEDD thus offers a variety of research, development and pilot production options, especially for OLED lighting, organic solar cells, OLED microdisplays and sensors. Therefore the complete service package is offered – from system design to technology development, pilot production of small series including substrate patterning, OLED deposition, encapsulation and system integration.

Fraunhofer COMEDD is active on OLED technology since about 1999. OLED based lighting is the main activity of Fraunhofer COMEDD since about 2005 starting with the EU funded FP6 project OLLA. In addition a lot of EU, national and local funded projects have be performed which pushed Fraunhofer COMEDD as a worldwide accepted leading R&D institute in this field.


Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR

The Italian National research Council (CNR) is the largest public research institution in Italy, the only one under the Research Ministry performing multidisciplinary activities. The Mission is to perform research in its own Institutes, to promote innovation and competitiveness of the national industrial system, to promote the internationalization of the national research system, to provide technologies and solutions to emerging public and private needs, to advice Government and other public bodies, and to contribute to the qualification of human resources.

The Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM) is part of the Italian National Council of Research (CNR) and is organized into seven different departments where microelectronics, sensors, and microsystems activities are performed with around 200 multidisciplinary staff. It has collaborations with the Microelectronics Industry (STMicroelectronics, SELEX-SI, TAS, Philips, Olivetti) Research Laboratories (CEA LETI, IMEC, Fraunhofer Institutes) and Universities. Research activity organized on four different main research lines: a) materials, processes and devices for microelectronics; b) sensors and microsystems; c) optoelectronics and photovoltaics; d) advanced characterization techniques for material and process analyses.

It has wide laboratory space equally split in clean rooms and characterization laboratory.


Sensor City, SENC

Sensor City is an ambitious Living Lab was established at Drenthe and the municipality of Assen in which a large-scale measurement network is realized. This urban measurement network alone has such a size (200 measurement points) and complex processing capacity that is a sign for the larger ambitions of the region within the peak ‘Sensor’. This will also give an immediate boost to the development of economic activities derived from sensor technology.

Sensor City aims at increasing the visibility of practical applications of the knowledge with regard to sensor technology. Various concrete applications take shape in activities that combine a direct benefit on the point of measurement and control “with a facility for business for the development of products and services. The sub-activities are carried out by consortia of companies and knowledge institutions. Sensor City has at present two sub-projects, Mobility and Vision. In these sub-projects is expressly reserved a place for SMEs. Now, more than twenty companies and organizations involved in Sensor City. Below are some research institutes and large (inter) national companies, knowledge and skills insertion in the various activities. Half of the twenty companies are SME. Half of these are located in the northern Netherlands as well as three of the four research institutions.


Lazio Connect, LAZIOCT

LAZIO CONNECT Association is a collaborative technological and legal platform created on 22nd July 2009 whose members are large-scale companies and manufacturing units of national and international groups, small- and medium-sized enterprises and research organizations acting, within the Regional territory in several different industries such as aerospace, electronics, ICT, avionics, aeronautic services and airport maintenance.

LAZIO CONNECT operates as a networking entity facilitating collaboration amongst Companies, Public End users and Research Organization, legally independent, that get together into temporary task-forces called Extended Enterprises which, by sharing knowledge and resources, can compete in the ever more demanding business landscape.

LAZIO CONNECT aims at generating additional business by overcoming the barriers to collaboration among cluster members by: i) Facilitating additional market penetration through a portfolio of services such as Pre-Commercial Public Procurement, exploitation of members technologies in non-core-markets applications and business relations with international clusters; ii) Facilitating system engineering and collaborative enterprising through the implementation of standardized processes, methods, risks and revenue sharing rules and the use of an ICT collaborative platform; iii) Facilitating the access to public and private funds for R&D, from the European Commission, ESA, National programs, and private financial funds (seed and venture capital).


Organic Electronics Saxony, OES

OES is a competence network, founded in 2008, represents the interests of the largest European organic semiconductor cluster. The network combines local, midsize companies as well as some of the most important, global players working in the field of organic electronic research and development in Saxony. OES specifically supports internal know-how transfer in R&D and offers a platform to boost companies’ existing global market position successfully and efficiently. Members receive a wide range of benefits and OES provides the opportunity to collaborate with international clusters.

OES members have excellent competences along the whole value chain from basic academic research to high-tech OLAE products. This covers especially basic and material research, laser micromachining systems and tools for OLAE, development and production of organic semiconductor devices, vacuum thin film technology, premium consumer electronics, printed electronics, organic integrated systems, functionalities and sensors.

OES Business activities consist of: i) Application and coordination of regional, national and European projects; ii) Management of conferences, workshops and symposia; iii) Representation of OLAE R&D, products and industry at international tradeshows; iv) Support of new start-ups and placement of financial support; v) Representation of the regional organic community and lobbying within the regional, national and European government; vi) Training and education for students, scientists and employees through summer schools, seminars, workshops or master courses.


Pôle d’Optique Photonique Sud, OPTITEC

OPTITEC is a leading French competitiveness cluster, located in south of France (PACA and Languedoc Roussillon Regions) specialized on photonics and imaging systems dedicated to space, aeronautics, defence, medical, food industry and green photonics applications. OPTITEC with 200 highly committed members represents more than 25% of French R&D in optics. The cluster developments are based on leading edge research centres and universities with world-renowned laboratories. The region has a dense network of SMEs, most of them leaders in their market sector, start-ups originating as spin-offs from the proliferation of major regional corporations or laboratories.


Technische Universiteit Eindhoven – COBRA Research Institute

The Eindhoven University of Technology is the National Centre of the Netherlands for Research on III/V semiconductors and optoelectronics. It hosts the COBRA Research Institute for Optical Communication Technology, which employs more than 150 scientists and technicians working on materials, device and systems research. COBRA is one of the world’s leading institutes in the field of Photonic Integration and holds a number of records on device miniaturisation and integration complexity.

COBRA has participated in a large number of National and European Research projects. EU (FP6 and FP7) projects in which COBRA researchers played a key role are: Paradigm (coordinator), EuroPIC (coordinator), BReATH (coordinator), SINPHONIA (coordinator), QUANTIP, HISTORIC, IPHOS, ULTRA, SPANGL4Q, SPLASH, MUSE, ISIS, SANDiE, PICMOS, ASPRINT, POF-ALL, LASAGNE, MUFINS, ALPHA, QESSENCE, MODEGAP, POF-PLUS, BOOM, NAMASTE, SemiSpinNet, LIGHTNESS, QD2D. Networks of Excellence seeded by COBRA include ePIXnet (jointly coordinated with IMEC), ePhoton-ONe, BONE, and EuroFOS. Particularly important was the FP6 NoE ePIXNET, where COBRA took a leading role in the creation of the InP-technology platform JePPIX. JePPIX has provided Europe with a leading role in the field of generic InP-based Photonic Integration, through the FP7 projects EuroPIC and PARADIGM and a number of national projects.


InvestorNet/Gate2Growth, INVG2G

Gate2Growth, aims at supporting innovative entrepreneurs in Europe as well as to assist Innovation Professionals to improve their capacity to assist entrepreneurs by fostering networking and the exchange of experience and good practice at European level. Among others, these include early stage technology venture capital investors, business angels and other funding vehicles InvestorNet-Gate2Growth is a private advisory and consulting company, located in Copenhagen, Denmark. InvestorNet is co-founding partner of the organization Greenovate Europe, which is an independent European expert group dedicated to open innovation for sustainable business. G!E provides innovation support services at EU level to research laboratories, technology developers, companies willing to acquire or spin-out new technologies, and to investors.

The InvestorNet team provides expert advisory services to entrepreneurs and investors on access to financing, business development and deal flow. The services of InvestorNet-Gate2Growth include both live on-line coaching on investor readiness and similar high level training (also for advisors) through Master Class programme. Through the InvestorNet-Gate2Growth web site there is an easy access to a tailor made on-line “library” on business development and relevant links including direct access to interactive on-line tools for e.g. business plan assessment. The tools and documentation available is the result of more than 10 years active participation in different EU projects. InvestorNet has conducted “Investor readiness” Master Classes more than 70 times throughout Europe.
